CWISH, along with various governmental and non-governmental stakeholders, celebrated World Day Against Child Labor on June 12, 2018, under the theme 'Generation Safe and healthy at work'. This year’s World Day Against Child Labor was celebrated with much enthusiasm and grandeur. Keeping the long tradition of celebrating this particular day, CWISH organized the following activities with the wider participation of various stakeholders.
1. Corner gathering against child labor
With the initiation of the Department of Labor, a corner gathering against child labor was organized on June 12, 2018 at Basantapur, Kathmandu. CWISH actively participated and facilitated the overall process of the gathering. Around 1000 people participated in the corner gathering. Gokarna Bista, Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security, representatives from CCWB (Central Child Welfare Board), CPC (Child Protection Committee), Municipalities of Kathmandu and Lalitpur district along with various civil society organizations. The program began with presenting a “KachariNatak” (Forum theatre) by Shailee theatre, where the artist portrayed the situation of child labor in Nepal along with the role of various governmental and nongovernmental organizations to protect/rescue those children. Towards the end of the program, the representatives from different governmental stakeholders presented their viewpoint on the situation of child labor in Nepal and how it can be minimized. They also felt overwhelmed to be part of the campaign program and were grateful to everyone for their presence and effort to make the day a success.
2. SMS campaign
Newly elected leaders at the local level government and other stakeholders from the different working districts of CWISH were sent SMS to highlight the problem of child labor and motivate them to make their areas free from child labor. The Mayor, Deputy Mayor and ward chairperson of all the working districts were sent the messages. Around 500 SMS were disseminated from 10th -13th June, 2018.
3. Media Campaign
Various media, including social networks, have been mobilized to raise awareness on child rights, specifically the rights of child labor.
3.1 Radio PSA
Public Service Announcements (PSA) promoting the rights of child labor have been developed on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labor. These PSAs are aired in 14 municipalities outside Kathmandu, namely, Biratnagar, Rajbiraj, Ratnanagar, Birgunj, Bharatpur, Pokhara-Lekhnath, Tulsipur, Ghorahi, Nepalgunj, Dasarathchand, Dipayal Silgadhi, Chandrapur, Janakpur, and Kanchanrup Times a day and will be played for six months. The PSA is played through local stations in each municipality.
3.2 Television/Radio Program
News 24, as CWISH media partner, the Interaction program with the Ministry has been played in the NEWS 24. Esteemed personnel have spoken for the rights of child labor. Radio Program “Aaja Ka Kura” covered the issue of Child labor on 12th June, 2018.
3.3 Press Release
A press release on child labor was published, accommodating the main finding of recent research conducted by CWISH on the issue of domestic child labor.
3.4 Social Networking Sites
Social networking sites, Facebook book have been mobilized to create frenzy about World Day Against Child Labor. Posters, brochures have been posted and shared through CWISH's Facebook page. On June 12, 2018 corner gathering against child labor was organized by DOL at Basantapur, Kathmandu and an invitation was disseminated through email to the participants.
4. National Workshop on the Need for Child-Sensitive Social Protection to Eliminate Child Labor
National Workshop on the Need for Child Sensitive Social Protection to Eliminate Child Labor was organized to celebrate the day. Representatives from the Ministry of Labor, MOFAGA, DOL, Police, different NGO/INGOs and other stakeholders participated in the program. The major focus of the workshop was to disseminate a paper presentation on the importance of child-sensitive social protection to eliminate child labor and to hold a discussion among the present stakeholders.
5. District-level program
On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labor(12th June,2018), an interaction program was organized by CWISH in Dhadhing District to discuss child labor issues of the district.
